Halcyon issued a safety notice covering the oxygen unit on the Symbios. This video is my account of it, recorded while it was happening.
This recall has since been completed. My own unit has been serviced. What follows is how it unfolded, written while it was happening — June 2026. What needs to happen with your unit is governed solely by Halcyon’s notice and by what your dealer tells you.
What it concerns
Problems turned up around the oxygen unit. As I understand it, the issue is oxygen cleaning: somewhere between the factory and Halcyon it did not happen the way it should have. Pressurised oxygen combined with a contaminant is exactly the situation you want ruled out on equipment like this.
I asked Halcyon for a clear written explanation and did not get one in that form. What is written here is what I was told, filled in with what was publicly available.
What the service does
Two things:
- Cleaning and re-establishing oxygen service. That addresses the cause the notice is about.
- Fitting a flow restrictor. Open the valve too quickly and it limits the flow rate. That makes the moment where things go wrong considerably safer — and it means you no longer have to treat opening the valve as a tightrope walk.
Service parts reached dealers the day after this video.
What I advised at the time
Skip the dive, take your old rebreather, or go open circuit. If you do get in the water before your unit has been seen to, be extremely careful opening your oxygen.
How it ended
The action is complete and my own unit has been serviced. Anyone who went to their dealer at the time is diving again.
What I make of it
A new product comes with teething problems. Anyone who dives one first — as I did — buys that risk knowingly. What matters then is how the manufacturer responds, and on that count I think Halcyon handled it well: communicated quickly, got parts to dealers quickly, and chose a fix that addresses the cause rather than papering a warning over it.
